Excitement fills the air as Wakulla Middle School enters the new year. The Wildcat students and staff look forward to the many challenges and opportunities the new semester brings. WMS welcomes one new member to the Wildcat staff. Ms. Jessica Mapes took over as our new technology teacher. We are fortunate to have her and look forward to the many educational opportunities that she will bring to our students.

Special congratulations go out to Jennifer McIntyre who won the Best of Show. WMS students stole the show at the District Science Fair, winning first place in 10 of the 12 categories. Winning their respected categories Jessie Mohr, Marquis Lyons, Mallory Thompson, Adam Evans, Shelbi Barrow, Lauren Staudenmaier, Chaise Bishop, Nathan Carnley, Tylor Melton, and Alyssa Show. Judges also awarded Alyssa Show with Best of Show.
Reading continues to be a priority at Wakulla Middle School. Students and teachers have been participating in the Florida Department of Education sponsored Sunshine State Reading Program. Currently, 260 WMS students have read at least one of the fifteen Sunshine State books; 50 students have read twelve; 25 students, one custodian, one administrator and eight teachers have read all fifteen! This reading program has prompted students to read a variety of books they may not normally read and has greatly encouraged reading for the pleasure of reading. Books, prizes and “get togethers” have been used to help promote this growing program. In addition, the school media center will soon be hosting a breakfast for those who have read at least 12 of the 15 books. This program also allows students the opportunity to share their views and opinions about the books they have read with teachers, other students and staff all across the school, thus creating a special reading comradery amongst all Wildcats. Thanks to all our local sponsors and especially our media specialist Ms. Angie Walker for heading this program.

Both the Wildcat boys and girls soccer teams finished the season with undefeated records. The MVP for the girls team was Rebecca Rivers. Receiving the most valuable striker award was Brooklyn Tindall and the most valuable defender was Casey Henderson. Coach Price attributes much of the Lady Wildcats success to the team’s cohesiveness and competitive nature. The boys team credited great defense and an opportunistic offense for their success. The team, captained by Liam Daniels and Morgan Henry, won some very exciting games against many quality teams. “I was very pleased with how our team came together throughout the season,” stated Coach Huyen Cam. “Our players showed improvement from game to game and I’m very proud that they have earned this undefeated season.”
Dedication, determination, and desire are the three words that come to mind when thinking about the Wildcat boys basketball team. The Wildcats played many tough games that were decided in the final seconds of the game. Thanks to Coach Hunter and all those that contributed to the success of this year’s team.
And last but not least, the Wildcat wrestling team finished another stellar year. The Wildcats made strong showings at the tournaments they wrestled in this year. Coach Chuck Cook is very excited about next year’s team, as many wrestlers on this year’s team will return for another season.
Ms. Deborah Randle, along with a group of African-American students participated in Black History Month Youth Day at Tallahassee Community College this past February. Wakulla Middle School also celebrated Black History Month with a wall display of famous Black Americans. Historical contributions by African-Americans were also read on the morning announcements. Thanks to Ms. Randle and others who made February a true learning experience for everyone.
Congratulations to Shelbi Barrow who received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Way to go Shelbi!
Thanks to all that made our first semester so successful. At Wakulla Middle School, we strive to provide a first class education for all our students and look forward to continuing to do so the second half of the year.
