Nine Wakulla High Students Visit Europe
Written by Cassie Tucker, WHS Art Teacher Saturday, 05 June 2010 11:47
During the 2010 Spring Break, nine WHS students traveled to London, Paris and Rome as part of an educational travel program coordinated by Wakulla High School teachers, Cassie Tucker and Susan Solburg.
“A once in a lifetime experience that I plan to repeat!” shares Christina Mathis. The program is offered every other year and has been a tradition for 15 years at Wakulla High School.
We are counting our blessings that we flew out of Europe just hours before flights were grounded due to the volcanic ash from Iceland. We want to express our sincere thanks to those in our community that helped make this trip happen. The economic downturn resulted in a smaller amount of participants which brought us under the minimum. Since we were facing a substantial extra charge we searched for ways to fundraise.
Tremendous thanks to our parent liaison, Janet Clark and Julie Slayton at Beef O’BBrady’s. They coordinated our Eurotrip students working to raise some funds for the trip. Also, we appreciate Orlando Hero, III at Rummy’s Pizza for contributing pizza student’s sold at the WHS Spring Talent Show. Thanks also to the students who baked, brought and sold concessions that night. We also thank Mr. Crouch, our principal for allowing the Eurotrip students to sell candygrams. Last, we appreciate the contribution from Dramatis Personae and Mrs. Solburg.
We have plans to begin a Euro-Trip Wall Plaque that includes a group photograph, trip information and our thanks to our community supporters.
"Mind the gap!” recalls Bennett Webb. This refers to the exciting experience of using the Tube in London, the Metro in Paris and the Big in Rome. Students learned to navigate around these major cities while exploring the many historical sites.
Sorrento, Italy was again the top favorite and will be in the program planned for Summer, 2012. Wakulla High students who like to travel can start planning and saving for the next exciting journey to London, Paris and Rome!
Thank you so much for your support.
