2008 Interact Scholarships Awarded to Lizzie Butler and Stuart Smith
{sidebar id=3}The annual Rotary Interact scholarships were awarded to two students during Wakulla High School’s annual awards program on Thursday, May 15th. Each student was given a $1000 scholarship to be used for college-related expenses courtesy of Wakulla Rotary.
These scholarships are awarded annually to students who have actively participated in the Interact Service Club at Wakulla High School. This year, Wakulla Rotary has initiated a new tradition and the names of the 2008 recipients will be inscribed on a perpetual plaque that was presented to Wakulla High School after the award ceremony.
The first scholarship winner, Stuart Smith, served as the Interact treasurer for all of his four years at Wakulla High School. In addition to his service with Interact, he was also active in the Marching Band, ROTC, and National Honor Society. He has been recognized by Who’s Who Among American High School Students and is a member of the 2008 Honor Court. His future plans include attending a four year university. He intends to earn a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering that he hopes to use in developing an alternative fuel vehicle that will improve the lives of his fellow Americans.
The second scholarship winner, Lizzie Butler, has distinguished herself in the classroom, in the community, and on the soccer field. She has taken an active role as an Interact member over the past two years. Last year, she was instrumental in helping Interact raise over $1000 to donate to the American Cancer Society. This year, she was elected President of the organization but chose to move down the slate to vice president to allow another student to gain leadership experience. She was the driving force behind the first ever and hopefully annual Wakulla High School Dodge Ball Tournament to benefit Relay for Life. Under her leadership, over 80 students competed on the court during the tournament and over 100 students came to cheer on their favorite teams. She has been recognized as a National Merit Scholar and is Wakulla High School’s 2008 salutatorian.
