Sopchoppy Pre-K News

February 2006

Exploring, discovering, investigating, celebrating, and learning!  Sopchoppy Pre-K teachers, Ms. Gail, Ms. Nancy, Ms. Lisa, Ms. Jolly, Ms. Michelle, Ms. Valerie (our newest teacher), and VPK teacher, Ms. Chris are always generating new ways to challenge their preschoolers and show them that learning is FUN!

We began the year with a goodbye-to-summer “Mud Day” event where we got to, well, explore mud.  What shapes can you make in the mud?  We cooked with mud (but chocolate dirt pudding we could eat), and we even read about it!!

Sopchoppy Pre-K is notorious for its walking field trips, and November had perfect weather for our walk to the IGA food store where we went on a five-food-groups scavenger hunt.  Before leaving, grocer Mr. Dwayne even treated us to a healthy snack - apples.  Backwoods Pizza then hosted a pizza party for us where we learned about how pizzas are made with the manager, Mr. Tyler, letting each child make his or her very own special pizza!

In December the students experienced the holidays around the world.  Ms. Nancy’s class hosted Christmas in Mexico with Mexican food, songs and a piñata. Ms. Gail’s class hosted Hanukkah where we learned about Jewish traditions like how to play with a Dreidel and dancing.  In Ms. Jolly’s class we experienced Kwanza with stories, art, and a community sharing of fruits and vegetables.  Even our speech therapist, Ms. Sarah, got in on the action with her recreation of St. Lucia’s Day.

We look forward this spring to another walking field trip to the post office, creating our own garden, and having Ms. Jolly teach us how to grunt for worms!  Meanwhile the preschoolers are diligently mastering readiness skills so that they are ready for the challenges of kindergarten.
