Riversprings Participates in Florida Engineering Society's MathCounts Competition

rms mathcounts team 2010.gifQuick, find the measure of the angle formed by the minute hand and the hour hand of an analog clock at 6:15.  You have 30 seconds to answer, no calculator, and about 200 people watching.  Such were the challenges presented at The Florida Engineering Society’s 27th annual MathCounts competition, February 6 at the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering in Tallahassee.  (Visit http://www.wakullaschooldistrict.org/rms/rmsweb10 for the solution.)

Riversprings Middle School placed ninth among elite mathematicians from fifteen competing middle schools in the Big Bend area.  The challenges included timed individual and team competitions, as well as an entertaining Cipher round in the afternoon that was open to parents, coaches and spectators.

Cameron Sherrell was the team’s top individual scorer, followed closely by Chris Paris, Libby Inlow, and Tyler Brooks.  Cameron placed 22nd in a field of nearly 150 mathletes.  Brook Roddenberry proudly represented Riversprings Middle School when she was selected to be honorary color guard for the first annual MathCounts Banner ceremony, to begin the proceedings.

MathCounts included team photos, individual and team competitions, a pizza luncheon, and closed with an awards ceremony.  The day-long event was hosted by the MathCounts Committee of the Big Bend Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society and sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the CNA Foundation, and Engineering firms from around the country.

Riversprings Middle School Team members are Tyler Brooks, Josh Conway, Landon Glover, Libby Inlow, Allison Metcalf, Chris Paris, Brook Roddenberry, Cameron Sherrell, and Brenna Wonsey, all 8th grade students at Riversprings.  Team coaches are John Kane and Brian Dow, 8th grade teachers at Riversprings Middle School.
