Riversprings Middle School Students will Travel to Washington, D.C.

tomb 2010This March, Riversprings Middle School students will participate in the third annual trip to Washington D.C. Approximately 20 students will spend four days of their spring break experiencing American history first-hand.  This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them.

Students will fly to D.C. accompanied by eighth grade teachers Brian Dow and John Kane.  While there, they will explore major historical landmarks, including the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, and Mount Vernon.  The students will have the opportunity to reflect on the achievements of great Americans at the Jefferson, Lincoln, and FDR Memorials, and honor our nation's heroes at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery. The students will also have the privilege of laying a wreath at The Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington.

The students are working very hard to raise the money necessary to go on this historic trip.  They have earned several hundred dollars by selling snow cones at the RMS home football games and have several more fundraisers planned.  The next fundraising event will take place this Saturday, October 30.  Participants will hold a yard sale from 8:00 to noon at Crawfordville United Methodist Church.  Several families will be selling items such as tools, sporting goods, furniture, and household goods.  The community is encouraged to come out and find some bargains while supporting the students’ fundraising efforts.

This year, they are getting some extra help from their sponsor, Mr. Dow,  and assistant principal, Ms. Baggett.  They will be participating in the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend in January to help raise money for the students.  Mr. Dow will be running the full marathon and Ms. Baggett will be completing the half marathon.  That means they will be running 39.3 miles in support of our students!  If you would like to support them in their efforts, you can contact Mr. Dow or you can donate online at www.giveforward.com/RaceForDC

The students are very excited to travel to our Nation’s capital at such a momentous time in history.  There is still time for eighth graders to sign up for the trip.  Anyone interested in the trip or in helping sponsor a student may contact Brian Dow by email at rmsdow@gmail.com or at Riversprings at 926-2300.
