Wakulla County School System Selects Name for Elementary School “A”
Many have recognized Wakulla County as an area that challenges the imagination. There are many beautiful places in Florida. But, potentially one of the most stunning sections could be in Wakulla County where the rivers wind through, appear and disappear several times, and flow from sinkhole to sinkhole.
Superintendent David B. Miller adds, “Understanding and appreciating the natural resources of our county is something we hope to pass on from one generation to the next. After considering the input from the online voting at the Wakulla School District web-site (www.wakullaschooldistrict.org ) and the numerous suggestions provided, The Wakulla County School Board voted and approved the naming of Elementary School A on March 17, 2008 as Riversink Elementary.”
Riversink Elementary follows the historical pattern in the Wakulla County School District of establishing school names that reflect the area in which they are located. Wakulla County School names include: Crawfordville Elementary, Medart Elementary, Shadeville Elementary, Riversprings Middle, Wakulla Middle, Sopchoppy Education Center, and Wakulla High School. There were approximately eighty unique names suggested by more than one hundred individuals. Riversink Elementary School was nominated by Sheila Slayton and Deborah Smith as well as six others.
While naming the new elementary school for the Riversink area of Wakulla County follows past practice it also opens the door for students to learn more about Florida’s natural karst topography. Sinkholes have been a part of Florida’s landscape ever since the peninsula emerged from the sea about 30 million years ago during the Oligocene Epoch. Sinkholes provide a primary pathway for rainwater to replenish subsurface groundwater; they are an important part of the aquifer system that supplies 95% of Florida's drinking water.
Appreciation and conservation of sinkholes is essential to ensure the future of Florida's freshwater supply.
Riversink Elementary is easy to spot when driving down Bloxam Cutoff, with the bright white metal roof. The school is on schedule and being readied for opening on the first day of the 2008-2009 school year. Jackie High, principal and Melinda Young, assistant principal, are already busy getting the school prepared for an exciting opening. Students and faculty will be included in the selection of the school colors and mascot.
