Dear Fellow Employees,
Congratulations are in order for students and staff alike as we approach the mid-point of our year with all of its student academic competitions and teacher recognitions. Wakulla Middle School seventh grader Jacob Thomas won the 31st annual Wakulla County District Spelling Bee, Wakulla High’s Academic Team took home its fifth straight championship trophy from the North Florida Community College Brain Bowl tournament, and eighth grader Patrick Fleming of Wakulla Middle School garnered Best of Show in the District Science Fair. These are just a few of the many competitions going on from now until the end of school.
Not to be outdone by their elders, the kindergarten class of 2006-2007 had the third highest score in the state on the Early Childhood Observation System (ECHOS), which assesses their readiness for school. Many of our students attended our accredited Pre-K program, and this is a reflection of that program’s success, including the new Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten.
Riversprings Middle School teacher Crissy Sarvis earned the honor of being named Wakulla County 2007 District Teacher of the Year. Congratulations also go out to all of our outstanding school-level Teachers of the Year: Pat Calhoun, Crawfordville Elementary; Connie Worrill, Medart Elementary; Rhonda Traweek, Shadeville Elementary; Angie Walker, Wakulla Middle; Sunny Chancy, Wakulla High; and Ashley Anderson representing from all of our schools.
We are looking forward to breaking ground June 1 on the new elementary school which will open in August, 2008. A Special Facilities Construction Account allows counties to apply to the state for funding to build a new school by matching dollars raised through capital outlay monies. Thanks to Assistant Superintendent Jimmie Dugger and others, we will be able to build a $15 million school using only $8 million of the taxpayers’ money. Wakulla is the only district in that program for this funding cycle. Plus, we are planning to build three additional classrooms at Shadeville Elementary School to be ready for 2008.
I know that students, faculties, administrators, and all of our staff members are working hard to prepare students for the upcoming FCAT tests. From the excellent teaching I have seen as I traverse the schools to observe in classrooms, I feel confident that our combined commitment to success will show in test scores, but more importantly it will be in the intangible ways you enrich our students’ lives everyday.
Sincerely,
David Miller
