Valuable Information about Education in Wakulla

Wakulla County Schools   David Miller
 Crawfordville, Florida    Superintendent
VOLUME XXIV ISSUE III  MAY 2006

 Dear Fellow Employees:

It is hard to believe that we are winding down another school year as we prepare for all of the awards ceremonies, celebrations, and graduations from Pre-K through Adult Education.  Every tiny or grown hand I get the privilege to shake this time of year reminds me of all the special people who have helped our students on their journeys - you.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Randy Newland, principal of Wakulla High School for the past ten years of dedicated service to our district.  He will be serving as a principal on special assignment until his retirement in February, 2007.  Congratulations to the newly named Wakulla High School principal for 2006-2007, Mr. Mike Crouch, who is serving as the assistant principal at Riversprings Middle School.

Many of our students have excelled this spring with the guidance of their teachers and parents.  At Wakulla High School, the Brain Bowl Team came in fourth in the first flight, with twenty-eight teams competing overall from surrounding counties.  Riversprings 7th grader Trevor Waters won the district Spelling Bee, and Wakulla Middle School 8th grader Alyssa Show was the overall Science Fair district champion.  In addition, 8th grader Megan Rollins from Riversprings won the state award for her essay and speech in the Patriot’s Pen Contest.  Our elementary students showed their academic acumen in tough Brain Bowl competitions at each school as well.

As we continue to prepare for next September’s District SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) Accreditation team visit, we will be looking at our school system as a whole and how we can always keep improving.  This is a new endeavor, different from the past accreditation of each school.  By looking at the big picture, we know that our mission of “Committed to Success” will echo throughout the district.

I hope you all have a restful, renewing summer.

Sincerely,

David Miller, Superintendent
