Wakulla County School District students ranked in the top ten in the state for 20 of 22 areas tested by the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) given in Reading, Math, Science and Writing to grades 3 through 11.
Scores for the 2009-2010 school year were released June 29.
Compared to other districts in the Big Bend, Wakulla County students ranked first in thirteen areas tested, second in five areas, and third in the remaining four areas tested. Surrounding Big Bend districts consist of Leon, Calhoun, Gadsden, Liberty, Taylor, Jefferson, Madison and Franklin.
Notable state rankings for Wakulla were third grade scores of #2 in the state for students achieving proficiency in Math; fifth grade scores of #2 in Reading; and fourth grade scores of #3 in Math.
Increasing at all levels tested in Science were grades 4, 8 and 11. They ranked # 4, #5 and #6 in the state respectively.
Superintendent David Miller noted, "In our global economy, it is important to see our science and math scores increasing because our students will be better prepared for the careers of tomorrow. I have confidence that our educators' hard work gives our students the ability to compete with any student from anywhere on any level. Although test scores are not the only measure we use, I understand that accountability is important for the public to see what our teachers and children do every day in a tangible way. "
FCAT scores range from Level 1 to Level 5. Levels 3, 4, and 5 are considered proficient by the state. Proficiency is defined as on or above grade level.
Wakulla County students ranked #1 in the surrounding Big Bend districts of Leon, Calhoun, Gadsden, Liberty, Taylor, Jefferson, Madison and Franklin in the following areas:
- Reading in grades 3, 5, 7, and 9
- Math in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10
- Science in grades 5, 8, and 11 (the only grades Science FCAT is given)
"Teachers, parents, administrators and support staff collaborate to make our children successful. Of course it's ultimately the students who take the tests. I am proud of each and every one of them for giving their best effort," stated Superintendent Miller.
