Wakulla School District Recognizes Top May Performers

Molly Jones Selected as May Teacher of the Month and Shirley Core Selected as Employee of the Month

molly jones 125For Molly Jones, the Wakulla County May Teacher of the Month, teaching is her passion.  She is a gifted teacher who inspires by finding the positive side of most situations.  Mrs. Jones enthusiastically shares, “The simple tasks of walking through the double doors every morning as a Crawfordville Elementary teacher excites me.  Our school runs so smoothly, students behave respectfully, and teachers all work toward the common goal of helping students reach their potential.”

Molly Jones has been teaching 2nd grade in Wakulla County for four years.  Mrs. Jones and her husband moved to Wakulla four years ago after living and working in Leon County.  She grew up in Carrabelle and graduated from Carrabelle High School.  She also graduated with degrees from Gulf Coast Community College and Florida State University.

Mrs. English, Crawfordville Principal, adds, “Mrs. Jones personifies teacher excellence.  Her classroom management creates a learning environment where students are encouraged to be active participants in the acquisition of skills and knowledge.  Her innovative teaching strategies motivate, challenge and provide diverse learning experiences.  She is a team player and is respected by parents, peers and students.  I commend her on being recognized for this well deserved honor.”

shirley core 125Compassionate.  Supportive.  Sympathetic.  These traits, plus many others, describe the Wakulla County School District Employee of the Month, Shirley Core.  Superintendent David Miller describes Mrs. Core as, “an employee that is in-touch.”  Shirley Core has worked in the Wakulla High School Guidance Department since September 1988 providing a listening ear, solid advice, and encouragement to students.  Prior to joining the War Eagle team as a staff member, Mrs. Core worked for the Wakulla County Tax Collector’s office.  Her love for Wakulla High School started long before 1988 as she is a War Eagle alumnus.  She also attended Sopchoppy Elementary School.  Following graduation, she honed her secretarial skills at Lively Vo-Tech Center.

When asked what she enjoys most about her job she said, “I am thrilled when our students succeed.  Whether it’s passing the FCAT, obtaining qualifying GPA’s, or accomplishing goals, when their faces light up with smiles, so does mine.  Our students are a lovable group who need to know that some one does care.”  Mrs. Core’s three sons completed school in Wakulla County as well.  She adds, “I consider it a privilege to work in this county, in our school system, close to home.  I enjoyed being the mom that could transport team players and support extra curricular activities.”

With her years of experience as a student, as a staff member and as an active parent, Shirley Core is able to offer a historical perspective as well.  She has witnessed WHS grow from 500 students to the 1,300 students currently enrolled.  Mrs. Core notes several WHS accomplishments:

•    The WHS Awards Ceremony has developed into an impressive monetary event, benefiting WHS graduates.  The Academic Boosters and the community in Wakulla County are dedicated to our students.

•    WHS has added a peer tutoring program sponsored by caring teachers.  This program has had a positive impact.

Mike Crouch, WHS Principal touts Ms. Core as a, “tireless worker that goes beyond her job requirements.  She is the epitome of a multi-tasker and somehow, she always manages to have a smile on her face and a polite greeting for those coming to the WHS Guidance Office.  Shirley Core is respected as a person and valued as an employee.”
