Wakulla Exceeds State Graduation Rate

Wakulla Exceeds State Graduation Rate

Superintendent David Miller announced that high school graduation rates for 2009 recently released from the Florida Department of Education show Wakulla topping the state average and improving over Wakulla’s 2008  rates.  States Superintendent Miller, “Our teachers’ diligent focus on rigorous education for all students is evident in the ability to surpass the state average and improve each year. Education begins with our youngest learners, so this is a system-wide cause for celebration.”

{sidebar id=1}Using Florida DOE calculations, Wakulla’s graduation rate is 84%, while the state average is 78.6%.  Wakulla improved 2.4% over last year’s 81.6% graduation rate. Wakulla High School Principal Mike Crouch notes, “It is our goal not just to improve the graduation rate each year, but also to have students prepared to be successful in college and careers after high school.”

A new formula will be used to grade high schools for the 2009-2010 school year, and it will include graduation rates based on the National Governors Association (NGA) rate. GEDs are not counted in this rate, but even using the NGA rate, Wakulla stands at 80% to the state’s 76.3% graduation rate. “It’s unfortunate that GEDs won’t count in the school grade, because students who go this route can attend college and can be very successful.  It’s a great alternative for some students who might not graduate otherwise,” observes Superintendent Miller.

Calculations are made using a cohort, which is defined as a group of students who graduate within four years of their first enrollment in ninth grade. Students who transfer out to another school are removed from the calculation and students who transfer in are included in the calculation.
