Wakulla County Leads the State with Highest Percentage of National Board Certified Teachers
Crawfordville, FL: Great schools begin with great teachers. The Wakulla County District School System continues to lead as the Florida school district with the highest percentage of teachers certifying as National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT’s). In December 2006, four more WCS teachers certified, bringing the total to 31 classroom teachers or 9% of the instructional staff. This is the highest percentage of district teachers to certify in Florida.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was established in 1987 with the purpose of identifying standards for the teaching profession and providing a voluntary means of identifying accomplished teachers who meet those standards. The purpose of NBPTS is not to replace state licensure, but to professionalize teaching. Since its inception, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has been dedicated to improving the teaching profession and positively impacting student learning. Superintendent David Miller is impressed with Wakulla’s teachers as well, “The decision to begin and/or continue the National Board process is completely up to the individual teacher. We applaud their courage and fortitude as they pursue and achieve this prestigious certification. The time, effort and dedication that they have committed to the education profession are notable.”
During this process, educators examine their teaching practices and the rationale for their teaching. Congratulations to Brooke Mohr, Medart Elementary School; Karrie Musgrove, Wakulla High School; Kim Bartnick, Crawfordville Elementary School and Savannah Boege, Riversprings Middle School, who all received notification of achieving National Board Certification prior to Christmas. There are currently nine more teachers throughout the district working through the process. Karen Wells, HR Director adds, “The National Board process is comprehensive and intense. Teachers reflect on their practices through extensive portfolio development, video-tapes, written reports, data analysis and tests. The teachers involved complete this process while simultaneously pursuing their career and maintaining their family life. It is a tremendous commitment.”
National Board Certified Teachers Angie Williams, Diane Driggers and Melisa Taylor, provided a support session for this year’s candidates in October 2006. For more information on National Board Certification, visit www.nbpts.org.
