Manatee Sightings!
September 21, 2009: Here is the current report from the USGS on the tagged manatees in our
area. CR-018 has been primarily using the Wakulla and St. Marks
Rivers and recently moved to Goose Creek Bay, just west of the mouth of
the St. Marks River.
"Izzy" left the Wakulla/St. Marks Rivers area on 08 Sept. and
traveled to the Ochlockonee Bay area where she has been using the
Sopchoppy River, Buckhorn Creek, and the Crooked River. She is
currently located at the mouth of Ochlockonee Bay.
"Harold" continues to use the Apalachicola Bay area with trips to St.
George Island. He is currently located in Blounts Bay, off of East
Bay.
On another note, TCR-12 "Ellie" who had lost her tag in Lake Wimico
in the Apalachicola area in July, was recently captured in Mobile Bay,
AL during a capture/tagging event led by Dr. Ruth Carmichael of Dauphin
Island Sea Lab. "Ellie's" residual gear was removed and she was
released upon completion of a health assessment.
We still have 12 manatees frequenting the Wakulla and St. Marks.
The mating has slowed down so the groups are down to 2 to 3 manatees at
the most. If we have a mild winter as we have had in the past 2 years
perhaps the manatees will stay through the winter.
