CRAWFORDVILLE, FL, July 19, 2006 - Senior citizens living in the Wakulla County community of Crawfordville may not have to look farther than Wakulla Trace Apartments for affordable rental housing.  The newly developed 34-unit senior citizens complex features studio and one-bedroom apartments for low and very-low income seniors and serves as the first of its kind in Wakulla County.  Wakulla Trace Apartments are situated between the Wakulla County Senior Citizen's Council, Inc., a nonprofit community center for local senior citizens, and the county health department, a convenient location that offers a variety of services to area residents.  An offiial ribbon cutting ceremony was held this past Wednesday, July 19, 2006.

Financing for the project was provided through a $974,850 USDA Rural Development rural rental housing loan, as well as financing from the Florida Home Finance Corporation Housing Credit Program and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta's Affordable Housing Program.  Predevelopment funding for the project was provided through the Florida Housing Finance Corporation's Predevelopment Loan Program (PLP) with advisors from the Florida Housing Coalition providing technical assistance throughout the PLP phase of the project.  In addition, Wakulla Bank and Fifth Third Community Development Corporation provided construction financing for the project.

Wakulla Trace Apartments offer 650-square feet and 800-square feet apartment units to qualifying seniors aged 62 and older.  "There is a critical need in our rural communities for affordable rental housing, especially for our elderly," said USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Clemons, at Wednesday's ribbon cutting ceremony.  "A safe, affordable place to call home is vital to strengthening families and communities, and quality housing for the elderly means peace of mind for the residents as well as their families.  Rural Development is proud to help make quality housing a priority in Crawfordville."

R. H. Carter, Director of the Wakulla County Senior Citizens Council, Inc., said "The most exciting thing in building these apartments was seeing how happy the seniors were as they were moving into their new homes on July 7."

USDA Rural Development is committed to the future of rural communities and is the lead Federal entity for rural development needs, administering financial and technical assistance through Rural Housing Programs, Rural Business-Cooperative Programs, Rural Utilities Programs and Community Facilities Programs.  Further information about USDA Rural Development can be obtained by contacting any USDA Service Center or by visiting USDA's website at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/fl
