Wakulla 12U Allstars Win Game One of the Cal Ripken World Series
Though the heat was near record-breaking in the Cal Ripken World Series in Van Buren, Arkansas, the Wakulla 12U Allstars beat the high temperatures with a win in front of the home town crowd on Thursday. The Wakulla Allstars represent the Southeast Region in the series and began pool play against the Van Buren host team winning 5-3. Van Buren, playing as the visiting team, hit the ball well in the first inning, but Wakulla’s defense put out three batters and leaving two on second and third. Then, in the bottom of the first, Wakulla’s batters began chipping away at the defense with 4 hits and 2 walks, scoring 4 runs while batting through the entire lineup.

In the bottom of the 4th, Wakulla answered with a walk, a perfect sacrifice bunt and a double making the score 5-2. After an uneventful 5th inning, Van Buren continued to struggle in the 6th for more runs and managed a run on a walk and a base hit, before Wakulla’s defense put out the side to win 5-3.
Wakulla’s pitcher faced 30 batters, struck out 7 while only walking 1. The Van Buren team managed 9 hits, but Wakulla’s defense refused to give up the win and left runners on base in every inning except the 5th. Play continues on Friday, August 10th at 2:30 pm for the Wakulla Allstars against Scottsdale, Arizona, the Midwest Plains Regional Champions.
