Joey Briggs Qualifies for Florida Swimming All-Star Team
Joseph “Joey” Briggs, a 7th grader at Riversprings Middle School in Wakulla County, qualified for the Florida Swimming All-Star Team (top 8 place finishes in an individual event), at the Florida Swimming Junior Olympic Championships held February 21 – 24 in Clearwater, Florida. Swimming in 6 events, the maximum allowed, Briggs qualified for finals (top 16 finishers) in 4 of his 6 events.
He also finished 6th in the 50 Yard Freestyle, which earned him the All-Star trip to Ft. Pierce, Florida, to be held March 29-30, 2008. In this event, he will represent Florida Swimming against the Florida Gold Coast Swimming. Florida Swimming includes teams from Panama City to Fort Meyers Florida, while the Florida Gold Coast Swimming includes teams from Fort Lauderdale to Key West.
{sidebar id=3}ATAC, Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club, sent 21 swimmers to the Junior Olympic Championships. ATAC finished in 9th place overall. The ATAC swimmers qualifying for the Florida Swimming All-Star Team are Cece Williams, Lia Lombardi, Alexandria Merritt, Megan Walker, Joey Briggs, James Bowen, and Jackson Brannon.
Briggs and other Wakulla swimmers travel daily to the Trousdale Aquatics Center on John Knox Road in Tallahassee to train because of the lack of a pool in Wakulla County.
