Riversprings Lady Bear Hoopsters Begin Play

basketball image 100.gifbae_65.gifThe 2007 Riversprings Middle School Girls Basketball season got underway on November 19, 2007.  The girl’s sideline will look different this season, as Coach Louis Hernandez takes over for the departed Devon Miles, who accepted the Head Coaching opportunity for the ladies at Holmes County High School in Bonifay, FL.  Coach Hernandez is no stranger to sports in Wakulla County, as he was an outstanding high school wrestler at Wakulla High School.  The Hernandez name is also associated with basketball in Wakulla County.  Coach Hernandez father Louis was a Coach in the Wakulla High basketball program for years.  The 2007 version of the Lady Bears have big shoes to fill.  The 2006 Lady Bears posted a 10 -2 record, including impressive wins over rival Wakulla Middle School and Blountstown.  Early indications are that the 2007 Lady Bears will be up for the challenge.

The Lady Bears tipped off their season against the Lady Bulldogs of Taylor County on November 19th.  Led by the scoring of Sherraine Murray and a stifling Bear defense, RMS notched a 35 – 27 victory.  Murray led all scorers, dropping 16 points on the Lady Dogs.  Jordan Pryor also led an outstanding defensive effort, garnering multiple steals.

Riversprings had to face a quick turnaround after their victory over Taylor County.  The ladies went on the road again the following night to face the Crusaders of Holy Comforter.  The Bears got into foul trouble early in the contest.  The Bears’ top offensive weapon, Sherraine Murray, got hit with 3 personal fouls in the first minute of the game.  With Murray on the bench for most of the game, the scoring burden fell on 8th grader Keyna Brown. The Lady Bears kept the lead for most of the half, then, just before halftime Brown injured her knee and was lost for the remainder of the game.  With two starters out of the line-up, RMS faced an uphill task.  At the end of the night, after a valiant effort by the Lady Bears, the Crusaders came out on top 28 – 18.  Even though she was plagued with fouls, Sherraine Murray led the Bears in scoring, chipping in 12 points.  Coach Louis Hernandez said, “The girls didn’t quit tonight.  That’s what we are most proud of is that our girls could have quit, and they didn’t.”

The Lady Bears will get back into action on Tuesday, November 27, at Maclay.  The Maclay game will be at 3:30 p.m.  RMS will have a busy week, as they will play back to back games on Thursday, November 29 and Friday, November 30, with the Crusaders coming to RMS in a rematch, and Wakulla Middle School will visit the Bears’ den on Friday.  Both contests tip off at 4:30 p.m.
