Wakulla Swimmer Joey Briggs Medals at Junior Olympics and Breaks ATAC Record
Joey Briggs placed 3rd in the 50 meter freestyle at the Junior Olympics, earning a bronze medal. The games were held at the University of Florida in Gainesville July 17 through 20, 2008. Briggs also made the finals, top 16 swimmers, in all 6 events, which is the maximum allowed. He is now listed as one of the top 10 swimmers for Florida Swimming.
His standings were 3rd-50 Free, 10th-100 Free, 9th 50-Back, 6th 50-Fly, 8th 100 Fly and 7th in the 200 Individual Medley. Briggs 50 Backstroke final time of 34.09 broke a 33 year old ATAC (Area Tallahassee Aquatics Club) record of 34.30, held by Darrell Rapp since July 6, 1975.
Thirty-four ATAC swimmers qualified for the Florida Swimming Junior Olympics. ATAC finished seventh overall.
ATAC JO medal winners (top three finishers) included Cece Williams, 2nd 11-12 girls 100 freestyle and 3rd 50 freestyle; Alexandria Merritt, 3rd 13-14 girls 100 freestyle, and Joey Briggs 3rd 11-12 boys 50 freestyle.
