Varsity War Eagles Ready to Take on Taylor County

Hutchinson-Deonte-5The Wakulla War Eagles varsity football team will take on Taylor County this Friday night in their first game of regular season play.

According to Asst. Head Coach James Vernon, the team is ready for the challenge.  "Taylor is a much improved football team over the last year," said Vernon.  "We will have to show up and execute and protect the football if we plan to beat them.  They have a very good running back and quarterback and a couple of really good receivers.  We will have to play good football and protect the ball to win the game.  So far we have had very good practices this week, and are getting ready for what should be a very competitive game on Friday night."

The War Eagles faced off against Leon and Rickards in last week's Fall Jamboree, which was played at Gene Cox Stadium on Thursday, August 26.  They lost to Leon by a score of 24 -7, and lost to Rickards with a score of 14 - 0.  According to Vernon, key players Marshane Godbolt and Will Thomas did not play either half due to minor injuries.  "We didn't want them to become more injured in a game that really didn't matter," said Vernon.  "We were being preventive by keeping them out, and doing so allowed a lot of our younger players to get playing time to see what they could do."

"Fumbles were the difference in the games," continued Vernon.  "We played pretty well on both sides of the ball, other than protecting the football.  If we can eliminate those mistakes we should be good this week."

Junior Deonte Hutchinson (pictured above) scored the touchdown in the first game.  "We kept everything really simple; just ran our base plays," added Vernon.  "We did very little to prepare for the Jamboree; we've kept our focus on getting ready for Taylor County, and worked primarily on fundamentals in the Jamboree.  Our goal at that point in the season is always to be ready for the first regular season game."

Friday night's game will be played in Taylor County at 7:30 p.m.  Their first home game will be played the following Friday night, September 10 against East Gadsden.  Come out and see the 2010 War Eagles in action!  If you are still interested in purchasing Gridiron season tickets or passes, contact Gridiron President Cyndi Dotson at (850)556-4099 or through email at cdotson1997@embarqmail.com .  If you have already purchased seson tickets or passes and have not yet picked them up, you can do so beginning at 7:00 p.m. at this Thursday night's JV game at J.D.
