Commissioners Will Ask for Federal Appropriations for Wakulla County

Commissioners Will Ask for Federal Appropriations for Wakulla County

I am being joined by Commissioner Kessler and Mr. Pingree, Wakulla County Administrator, at the National Association of Counties Conference in Washington DC from Saturday, 1 Mar through Wednesday, 5 Mar.

While in Washington DC, I will be actively lobbying for federal appropriations for Wakulla County.  To my knowledge, this is the first trip any commissioner or Wakulla County representative has made to Washington to ask our legislative delegation to help us help ourselves.

{sidebar id=1}I will be focusing on three things while in Washington.  As usual, these items have to do with infrastructure.

My main priority is to ask for $1.9 Million to extend sewer onto Live Oak Island.  This island has over 60 homes with the capability to grow to 120 homes (numbers are estimates and not exact).  All these homes are on septic tanks and we need to continue protecting our bays and beaches by removing these homes from septic tanks.

My second priority is to ask for help to redesign and build the intersection of Crawfordville Highway and Highway 98.  This intersection handles practically all our high school students and hundreds of our middle and elementary students on a daily basis.  This request will have much more chance for success during the omnibus transportation bill Congress passes every five years (not being discussed this year).  Both of these items were approved at the Board’s annual retreat.

I will also be asking for $500,000 to help Wakulla County pave Old Shell Point road and reduce congestion on Crawfordville Highway—a request not specifically discussed at the annual retreat.  I will ensure our legislative delegation knows and understands the difference.

I will also continue to be available by phone if anyone needs to contact me.  Thank you for allowing me to serve.
