Written by R. H. Carter Monday, 27 March 2006 15:51
The Sheriff David Harvey / Wakulla County Senior Citizens Golf Tournament was held Friday, March 24. It was a cold morning with plenty of sunshine in store for the day. Over 100 players assembled to have a fun day of golf. R.H. Carter welcomed everyone and reminded them to pay close attention to the tournament sponsors listed in the golf brochure and on the large sign at Wildwood. Many thanks were expressed for the title sponsor, Wakulla Bank. They provided the prizes in addition to their sponsorship.

Wakulla Bank elected to honor one of Wakulla County’s senior citizens as Senior Celebrity for this tournament. Ms. Eula Mathers, a 97 year old great-great grandmother was selected as the Senior Celebrity. Born in 1908, she is a life long resident of Wakulla County. Her late husband was a farmer and a native of Wakulla. Even though she is losing her eyesight, she loves going to the senior center. She says that her faith in God, her family and the Senior Citizens Center keeps her young at heart.
Sheriff Harvey continues to lend his name and support to this tournament. He talked about Wakulla County and how senior friendly it is becoming. As his deputy fired the gun, all players scattered in their carts and headed to their starting holes so they could all begin play at the same time.

The entire golf course became as busy as an ant bed. Balls hit long and straight, into the woods, in the water and scuffed just a few feet made it a real day of golf. Laughter and other comments could be heard everywhere.
As the sun reached its highest point along with the temperature the players completed their round. Each team brought in their scorecard, some with pride and others with hesitation. The teams were ranked by score and the flights were then determined. The best score was first place in flight A, the 9th best score became first place in flight B, and the 17th best score became first place in flight C. The best score was submitted by the team sponsored by Veolia Water Systems. The players included Bill Stephens, Joe Blanchard, Parrish Barwick and Sheriff Harvey. Other winning sponsors included Johnson Insurance Agency, Wakulla Bank, Joe and Betty Barry, North State Title, Ameris Bank, Lisa’s Listing and two teams sponsored by Ms. Ruby Snyder.

All players enjoyed a delicious buffet prepared by Wildwood Country Club. They also had a real fun day of golf. Many expressed how this was the greatest tournament they had played in. The proceeds of this tournament will be used for in-home and senior center services.
We would like to thank all of our tournament sponsors; without their support this event would not have been possible!
