Wakulla Health Care Task Force
November 21, 2006
Members Present: Lynn Artz, Karen Clevenger, Lisa Hamilton, Lat Penland, Mary Westbrook.
Welcome and Introductions
Karen Clevenger, the new Office Manager for Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine, was welcomed to the group.
Nominating Committee Discussion (Mary Westbrook):
Possible candidates for Task Force Co-Chair were named and included Dr. Stella, Allyson McKay, and Lu Stringer. Lat Penland was mentioned as a possible candidate for Task Force Chair (after he retires).
North Florida Medical Centers (Lat Penland):
Lat Penland drafted a letter from the Task Force to Joel Montgomery of North Florida Medical Centers expressing concern about recent events at Wakulla Medical Center and inviting Mr. Montgomery to our January Task Force meeting. We discussed the likely impacts of the loss of Dr. Charbonneau and Quinn Noles. We agreed that Wakulla County needs more involvement on North Florida Medical Centers’ board of directors if our county is going to have any impact on how they operate here. The draft letter was reviewed and approved. It will be circulated to other Task Force members for review, then mailed to Mr. Montgomery. We agreed to hold the January meeting in the BOCC Chambers and invite all five County Commissioners to attend.
Sales Tax Initiatives in Neighboring Counties (Lat Penland):
The success and failures of recent sales tax referenda in Leon, Gadsden, and Madison counties were discussed. Lat Penland will continue to follow these efforts in Leon County. Lynn Artz will contact Maximo Martinez in Gadsden county for his insights.
Updates & Announcements:
• Healthy Start will offer free childbirth classes in January and February using a new curriculum.
• Healthy Start was granted an award for 500 infant car seats but will not receive the car seats until March (rather than in January as expected).
• Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine has its new X-Ray machine installed but is waiting for certification.
• The Wakulla County Health Department recently hired a Chronic Disease Educator: Melvena Wilson.
No meeting in December.
In January, the Task Force will meet on Thursday the 18th (not Tuesday the 16th) in the Wakulla County Commission Chambers (behind the Courthouse) at 6:00 p.m.
Have a Wonderful Holiday Season!
