Minutes
September 23, 2008

Members Present:  Lynn Artz, Tomica Archie-Smith, Diane Cook, Regan Franckhauser, Tonya Hobby, Sarabeth Jones, Jennifer Langston, Mary Lescher, Rob Moss, Beth O’Donnell, Benjamin Pingree, Cathy Price, Jody Smith, Mary Westbrook, Kris Whitten

I.    Welcome & Introductions

II.   Presentation from Wakulla High School Medical Academy/Diane Cook, Sarabeth Jones, Ryan Smith. And Regan Franckhauser

The Medical Academy is a Career and Technical Education Program that has recently been started at Wakulla High. The goal of the academy is to prepare students for entry-level employment or advanced training in a variety of health occupations including a bio-medical track. Students have hands-on learning opportunities by participating in job shadowing, clinical experiences, field trips, volunteer programs and community health activities. Upon completion of this program students will have had the opportunity to receive CPR, First Responder, Critical Care/Monitor Technician, and Certified Nursing Assistant certification.

School Personnel expressed desire to collaborate with community partners in order to provide students with a variety of opportunities. Capital Regional Medical Center provides students with 5 weeks of clinical/direct patient care. Wakulla Health Department has utilized students on the Dental Mobile Unit while visiting elementary schools. The Medical Academy expressed interest in expanding collaboration with other Health Care agencies including EMS and Tallahassee Memorial Health Center. The Task Force discussed a variety of ways to assist with the Academies needs.

III.   Presentation on “Voter Approved Sales Tax for Indigent Care/ Benjamin Pingree and Jennifer Langston

The presentation addressed medical service needs in Wakulla County and funding alternatives.  Discussed surrounding counties successes and challenges regarding sales tax approval. According to the data, sales tax could generate $1.2 million annually. (Detailed presentation was made available in writing to all members).

IV.   Provider Updates:

Capital Regional Medical Center:  Vascular Screening/Angio Screening Mobile Testing is now available. The Mobile Unit is also available for Health Fairs.

Capital Regional Medical Center/Wakulla:  Now online with Florida Shots-Congratulations!

Tallahassee Memorial Health Center:  Outreach Cardiovascular Lab is now available and fully staffed.

Wakulla County Health Department:  Jody Smith was recognized as the new Director of the Health Department. Jody reported that the Dental Mobile Unit has been providing services at the Elementary and Pre-K schools. The Health Department also now has an Ultra Sound machine that can be utilized in the OB Clinic. The Tobacco Prevention Program plans to implement the Second Annual Quit and Win Event at the Valentines Festival in February. Also, Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) is currently active in the Middle and High Schools. 

Wakulla County Healthy Start:  Child Birth classes being offered. Classes are free. Participants who attend all classes will receive free car seat. Healthy Start is also sponsoring “Car Seat Safety Day”.

Stakeholders meeting is being planned to conduct Needs Assessment for Wakulla and Leon County for 2010.

VI.   Announcements:

All Wakulla Health Care Providers are now on Florida Shots System. Congratulations!!!!

Sports Physicals were provided over the summer at Wakulla High School Clinic. All Health Care providers were represented. Way to work together!!

Visitors Brochure has been printed and distributed to local Hotels, Schools, and Realtors.

VII.   Meeting Adjourned:  Next meeting to be announced. It was suggested that the Health Care Task Force consider having an upcoming meeting at the Wakulla Medical Academy
