The Benefits of Quitting Smoking

broken cigarette 150.jpg{sidebar id=3}According to the American Cancer Society, quitting smoking pays off quickly with health benefits.  Within just 24 hours of quitting, your chance of “sudden death” (dropping dead from a severe heart attack or abnormal heart rhythm) is cut in half.

Within only 8 hours, the amount of carbon monoxide in your blood drops and your blood oxygen increases to normal levels.  The temperature of your hands and feet increases to normal.  Within 48 hours, food begins to taste and smell better.

Within 2 weeks to 3 months your circulation improves and your lungs work better.  Walking becomes easier.  Within 1 to 9 months, coughing, sinus congestion, and shortness of breath decrease.  You get fewer colds and infections.  You feel less tired and your body’s overall energy increases.

The longer you go without smoking cigarettes, the more you continue to lower your chances of developing or dying from heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and many other cancers.  You also improve the health of those around you by reducing their exposure to cigarette smoke.
