Wakulla County's Relay for Life 2006:
"United for a Cure"

Wakulla County's Relay for Life 2006 is scheduled for April 21 and 22 at the Wakulla High School track.  The 2006 event theme is "United for a Cure".  This year each registered team will represent a different state of our United States of America.

Let me share a little bit about Relay for Life for those of you who are not familiar with this event.  Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society overnight event committed to the fight against cancer.  Teams commit to raising a minimum of $1,000 each and to having one person walking the track at all times in honor of the fact that cancer never sleeps.  Teams camp on site for the 18 hour event.  During the Relay event cancer survivors are honored; luminaria are lighted to honor survivors or to remember those who have lost the fight against cancer; and non-stop entertainment is planned for the public and campers alike.  The event committee seeks corporate and small business sponsors whose support of the event is highlighted throughout the Relay season.

How can you be involved?

Register a team:  You can register a team at any time.  You do not have to wait until a team captain's meeting to do so.  Teams are asked to commit $100 to register.  For the event, teams establish a campsite around the track and participate in various ways throughout the Relay event.  Team captain's meetings help keep your team on track right up to the Relay event.

Survivors:  We need survivors to register so we can recognize and honor them.  Get on our survivor list so we can let you know all the details planned for the April 21 opening ceremony.  Any team member or committee member can get you a form to complete.  We need to know you are interested in being a part of our Relay Celebration.  Remember:  survivors need to register each year.

Luminaria:  The luminaria is purchased in honor or memory of those who have battled cancer.  Early purchase of the luminaria helps the committee prepare the bags that are placed around the track and lighted in a special ceremony during the Relay event.  Luminaria remind us why we are working so hard to fight cancer.

Sponsorship:  We need sponsors for the Relay.  Sponsors help make the Relay visible in the community.  There are many levels of sponsorship opportunities.  Corporate Sponsors ($1,250 & above) have their business or company logo on the back of all event T-shirts.  Any level of sponsorship is appreciated.  One unique sponsorship opportunity, that is very affordable, is the Purple Sponsors who purchase track markers at $100 per side to note their business or special interest.  These track markers surround the track during the 18 hour event.

Entertainment:  Activities are planned throughout the event.  Entertainment is scheduled non-stop during the 18 hour event for team participants and the general public.  Groups donate their time to be a part of Relay.  Contact us if you would like to entertain during the Relay event.

Planning and preparation for this year's event is well underway.  Approximately 23 teams have registered for this year's event but we have room for many more.  Relay is a celebration so the more the merrier.

Five corporate sponsors have committed to our event:  Ameris, Wakulla Bank, TMS Cancer Research Center, the Florida Lottery and Wakulla County School Board.  We are proud of these five sponsors, but would love to have you as one of the businesses highlighted on our T-shirts for the 2006 Relay.  If your business can not swing the $1,250 corporate sponsorship, we appreciate any type of support.  There are many other levels of sponsorship for the event.  Please call for more information.

We need to hear from you.  We want you to be involved:  as a team, as a cancer survivor, as a purchaser of luminaria, or as a corporate or business sponsor.  The Wakulla County Relay for Life Committee is available to help you get involved.  Note the contact names given below.  Any of these committee members will gladly share information with you.
