Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival will be Held in Panacea
Panacea will host the Big Bend’s first-ever mullet festival Nov. 18 along its downtown waterfront on Dickerson Bay at Woolley Park.
The day-long Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival will be highlighted by an
international mullet cook off offering more than $3,000 in prize money
to backyard cooks and restaurant chefs alike. The competition will
comprise three categories for (1) appetizers such as dip and roe, (2)
first courses such as salad, stew, and soup, and (3) main courses such
as fried mullet and stuffed mullet. The overall “Mighty Mullet Award”
will be presented for best presentation. All cooking will be done on
site.
In addition to having mullet to judge, there will likely be mullet to eat, thanks to a variety of food vendors expected along with arts and crafts vendors.
Proceeds from the festival will benefit the Big Bend Maritime Center, a living museum planned for the Panacea waterfront under the sponsorship of Florida Foresight, a non-profit organization to promote balanced environmental, economic and social progress in coastal regions of Florida.
Bill Lowrie, Florida Foresight director, said the mullet festival “is being planned as a fun day for the entire family while we celebrate our Big Bend heritage with food, music, and maritime activities.” Entry fees are $3.00 per person with children 12-and- under admitted free. The event will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Events and special attractions are expected to include a fish tales tent for oral history, model boat building and mullet jumping contests for children, white boot races for watermen, net casting contests, historic reenactments, antique boats, live music from the Woolley Park sound stage, the finals round of a maritime karaoke contest, and the crowning of the Mighty Mullet king and queen.
Panacea is located along Coastal Highway 98 in Wakulla County just south of Tallahassee on the Gulf Coast. The maritime community also hosts the popular Blue Crab Festival each spring.
