Wakulla History Museum and Archives Update

Wakulla History Museum and Archives Update

sign in place.gifWe had almost 150 people come for a look on June 23.  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with setting up exhibits, baking cookies, handing out information and lemonade during a sweltering afternoon.

There's still work to do:  Most interior doors (wood) will have to be stripped of layers and layers of paint.  If you are a furniture refinisher you know how to do this.  If we can get one or two doors to about 5 different people the job could be done quickly.  Let me know (926-3126) if you want to be a door stripper.

We also need help in loading the doors (very heavy) into my truck to transport.

We still need help scraping some paint, cutting fresh baseboard and painting the same and installing it over new and old drywall.

Biggest hurdle:  Applying masonry/sakrete layer to a 3x3 foot area on the ceiling that had heavy water damage.  If we can get a volunteer to do
this I would be very, very grateful.

{sidebar id=1}The electrician is replacing wiring and installing fixtures.  The floor companies that I had to give estimates never came through and so I'm going to ask around again for a floor company that can install vinyl tiles to meet to measure the area in question for an estimate.

Once the wiring and fixtures are in place, the hall walls will be painted and then the acoustical tile ceiling will be installed to cover the duct work.

We'll be looking for cabinet fixtures; will clean the existing tile floor in the old inmate's kitchen and installing blinds by the end of August.  Scraping of paint in the foyer on the east side of the building is taking a long time.

Volunteers are always welcome.

Update on grant:

Our Special Category grant that made it into the top 60 last year will be reconsidered.  This means we are re-writing the budget to reflect all the work that is going into renovating the former jail.  The Historic Preservation Commission will reconsider these so-called "rollover" applications sometime in September.  That's the time to call on all your powers of whatever persuasion to send positive thoughts to those commission members.  If anyone wants their names to write them a note, let me know.

Again, thanks to all of you who are helping make this come true.
