Consider Joining the Iris Garden Club of Wakulla County

It must be Springtime in the Panhandle when we are greeted by chirping birds early in the morning. It’s also the time of year when many people get the itch to go outside and plant something.
It’s not too late to plant that tree or shrub or a salad garden before summer’s heat sets in. These are the type of things we talk about at our monthly meetings at Wakulla’s very own Garden Club.
The Iris Garden Club of Wakulla County, Inc. meets every 3rd Tuesday at 1:00pm at the Public Library. Everyone is welcome. Many people are new to our climate (two growing seasons!) and join for the purpose of learning how to garden in the South. We always welcome new members. Meetings are casual: first we hang around and socialize while consuming a few snacks. This is always a good time to exchange gardening successes/problems. It’s not unusual for members to bring in that pesky weed for identification. We then have a short business meeting followed by a different program every month. The program scheduled for our February 21st meeting is all about flower arrangements. The presenter is one of our members, June Ann Hassebroek, who is a nationally recognized flower show judge. Her creations are amazing! She can whip up a masterpiece with just a few branches and twigs.
Some of our other monthly programs are on proper pruning methods, camellia gardening, container gardening, vegetable gardening, butterfly gardening just to name a few. Many of our members are long time gardeners and are always happy to pass along their wisdom as to the do’s and don’ts of gardening in our neck of the woods. We also support various projects such as sending 6 to 8 kids to summer camp and give away hundreds of young trees at Wakulla County’s Arbor Day. We are involved with the landscaping efforts around the Library grounds and Habitat for Humanity using mostly native plantings. We also provide therapy gardening for our two senior centers, and the hands-on learning garden for the kids at Coast charter school. Vegetable gardening is especially popular with these latter two. To fund all of these projects we organize various fundraisers with the biggest one being our annual plant sale at the Worm Gruntin’ Festival in Sopchoppy every April.
Please think about joining us at our upcoming meeting on February 21 at 1:00pm at the Library to meet like-minded gardeners and learn about flower arranging. If you would like more information about the garden club contact Jeannie Brodhead (President) 926-2264; Dorothy Pate (Secretary) 926-0885; or Angret Piasecki (Treasurer) 926-5049.
