The Tallahassee Film Society presents at the All Saints Cinema "Wakulla Springs Night" and Madeleine Carr's new book "A New Deal for Wakulla: Art and Marble in a Florida Swamp".
Historian Madeleine Hirsiger Carr’s research takes her behind the most obscure pictures in historical settings. She researched and curated exhibits throughout Florida and was a founding member of the Friends of Wakulla Springs State Park where she helped to locate funds to preserve the lodge and conserve the painted ceiling. “These Depression-era paintings are so unlike other New Deal art I had to figure out who did what and why,” Carr explains. Now Madeleine has compiled her research with Richard Brunck’s photographs of the ceiling icons in a new book.
She received her PhD from FSU and is an adjunct professor of history at TCC when she isn’t looking behind more obscure art. See the ceiling icons up close and visit with Madeleine and Richard to talk about “A New Deal for Wakulla: Art and Marble in a Florida Swamp.”
We will also screen “Wakulla Springs,” an archival collection of vintage films restored in conjunction with the Friends of Wakulla Springs. Edited together are some of the best classic news reels, educational and promotional footage from the past 60 years of Wakulla Springs. This is a fun 70-minute romp from the 1940s through today with some stirring images from the great lodge fire, WWII training, Springs cave exploration, “Creature From the Black Lagoon,” “Tarzan” and rare Ed Ball footage.
This event will be held Sunday, January 23 at 5:00 PM at the All Saints Cinema, located at 9181/2 Railroad Avenue in Tallahassee. Ticket prices are $7 general admission, $5 TFS members, and $5 students with ID.
