Simplicity
It's amazing how small things can trigger an old feeling of security, like a blanket that enfolds you.
The sound of dishes clinking, a fork scraping the sink, late at night, when you are safe in bed and you know your mother is taking care of the night things.
Your grandmother's voice.
The taste of honey, lemon juice and a drop or two of whiskey.
The sound of mothers calling their children home at the end of the day, their voices ringing.
The smell of fall in the air; maybe because it reminds you of Halloween and bonfires and football games, of a time when life was not so complicated and you thought you knew your place. A time of blissful ignorance.
The sound of a playing card against bicycle spokes.
The feeling of your father's arms carrying you into the house late at night, because you fell asleep in the car during the ride home. You weren't really asleep, though. You just want to be your father's child a little longer.
Sometimes the need to feel these things is overwhelming, even at 43.
