August 6th First Friday Art Hop at LeMoyne: Mammals, Music and Making a Difference

thicker-than-water-flierThings at the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts are hopping, even before the next First Friday on August 6th.

With a new interim executive director, the historic house on Gadsden Street is bustling with renewed energy, enlivened artists and exciting activities.

“After struggling with financial challenges, we at Lemoyne are now re-evaluating our strengths, and re-aligning ourselves with the community,” said Ann Kozeliski, who took the post as interim director in June. The re-invigoration of the 47 year old center will be quite obvious at this month’s First Friday Art Hop, when LeMoyne teams up with the Florida Wild Mammal Association and the Crude Awakening Letter Writing Campaign to present Thicker than Water: An Exhibit of Community Concern.

The exhibit will feature artwork produced by two of LeMoyne’s art education instructors, Allison Jackson and Patrick Lane, as well as cards created by LeMoyne art students of all ages.

“The subject matter of Allison Jackson’s paintings is reflective of the Gulf Coast oil spill, so partnering with the Florida Wild Mammal Association and Crude Awakening was a natural step,” Kozeliski explained. “But this is a celebration, not a protest."  The Wild Mammal Association will present statistics on current rescues, lemonade will be sold, and the SAIL High School Bluegrass Ensemble will perform in the sculpture garden.  Cards, created by LeMoyne art students, will be available for guests to write down their thoughts about current issues and send to their elected officials.

“We want to give back to the community if only a fraction of what it has given to us,” said Kozeliski.  “We are opening our doors, giving them a party and providing them a way to get involved.  We are all in this together, and we want LeMoyne to be a gathering place, where our community meets to focus on things that are beautiful and important.”

The First Friday Art Hop will last from 6 pm to 9 pm.  The exhibit will run from August 3rd through August 17th.
