Wakulla County
Historical Society News

April 2008

by Betty Green

Dear WCHS Members and Others Interested in Local History,

The Wakulla County Historical Society’s last monthly meeting before the summer break is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 7 PM at the Wakulla County Public Library.  We are looking forward to another presentation by Mays L. Gray on the topic of the G. F. and A. railroad in Wakulla County.  Mr. Gray has done extensive research on the railroad that pumped life into, and through, the western part of Wakulla County in the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s.  Through words and slides, a wealth of information concerning the creation and operation of this important segment of Wakulla history will be shared.

{sidebar id=1}The Georgia, Florida and Alabama Railroad was known by other names, as Mr. Gray relates in his history but a name tossed around in recent years has been the Gopher, Frog and Alligator Railroad.  Nelson Martin, also a member of WCHS, will bring us up to date with the current plans for the Old Depot in Sopchoppy.  We are all excited at the thought there is movement toward the restoration of that historic landmark.  This will be another meeting you don’t want to miss.

Our next regularly scheduled program will be in September but we earnestly solicit your interest and participation in the efforts to create museum and archives space in our old jail over the summer months.  We need volunteers for work, for funds as well as planning, therefore, I encourage you to “stay tuned” to see what you can do to help.  We hope to have a report at the May meeting as to the current plans and promise that you will hear more from us.

The Heritage of Wakulla County, FL is underway!  You will hear more as to publication dates…but it will be in time for Christmas sales.  Thanks to all of you who have contributed stories!

Sincerely,

Betty Green,
Wakulla County Historical Society (WCHS)
