Wakulla County March 2008 by Betty Green |
Dear WCHS Members and Others Interested in Local History,
{sidebar id=1}Last month we enjoyed hearing about Panacea and its development as well as seeing the great old pictures that were displayed by Paige Killeen at the Welcome Center in Panacea. We appreciated Paige’s work as well as Sherrie Posey Miller, Bonnie Hollub, Linda Thompson and Vivian Johnson who all had a part in creating a great meeting with their individual contributions to the program. I’m sure those of you that attended join me in saying “Thank you” to each of these ladies.
Our next meeting, Tuesday, March 11, 7PM, at the Wakulla County Library will concentrate on the general history of the area from Curtis Mills north to Ashmore in the western part of Wakulla County. This area developed along with the GF&A railroad in the late 1800’s. Rather than having one speaker, we hope to have several reports given about people and places of that era. Remember, we are trying to cover the history of our county in the order that it developed…east, south, west and finally central. This year we’re working on the south and west, next year will be central. Come join us to learn about Wakulla’s past. It really is interesting!
Next month, Tuesday, April 15, we will meet in Sopchoppy’s School to hear local citizens tell Sopchoppy stories and perhaps stories of the surrounding area. We’re really looking forward to hearing from those who’ve lived in the areas we are studying. Write this date on your calendar!
One more extremely important date…March 31, ’08, Deadline for submission of stories for our Wakulla Heritage Book. PLEASE make a submission. If you live here now…you have a history in the county. If you have lived here or if you have ancestors who lived here, you have stories. You may get further info about this project by calling 926-7405, or picking up a brochure at the Library, or reading the Wakulla News, or reading the Wakulla Area Times, or visiting our website, http://www.rootsweb.com/~flwchs.
Looking forward to seeing you next Tuesday evening, 3/11, at 7Pm at the Library!
