Student Work Programs 2006

During 2006 FWMA will offer the following student work programs:

OJT Program -    (On The Job Training Program)

This is offered to students by Wakulla High School as an opportunity for them to acquire work experience during school hours.  Presently we have two OJT students of which one has expressed an interest in keeping his job for the summer.

Special Education Work Days

This is program is offered by Wakulla High School to students with disabilities.  The program gives them the opportunity to perform community service hours during school hours.  It gives them the opportunity to learn to work as a team, exposes them to a work environment and gives them a sense of community involvement.  Presently special education work days are scheduled every Thursday and will end in May when school closes for the summer and will resume again in the fall.  One of these students has expressed an interest in working through the summer.

Project Learn and Serve

Project Learn and Serve is a grant program offered by Wakulla High.  The goal of the program is to fund projects that will be completed by students at local, non-profit organizations.  This allows students, teachers and local businesses a unique opportunity to work hand-in-hand.  We presently have three classes involved in a grant to paint fences and stain buildings every Friday until school ends in May.  In the fall we will apply for another project(s).

Scholarship Program

Wakulla High School and Wakulla Middle School offer various scholarships to students.  As part of the requirement for these scholarships, students must complete a certain amount of community service hours.  FWMA offers a healthy environment to complete this requirement.  This provides FWMA with students for its Student Work Program and we are blessed with highly motivated individuals.  We presently have four scholarship students and three have expressed an interest to work through the summer.

Sheriff’s Department Second Chance Program

This program is offered by Wakulla County Sheriff’s Department.  It is for children/teenagers who have gotten into trouble with the law and who have chosen to perform community service hours to keep a conviction from appearing on their records.  These individuals are not part of the Student Work Program and require constant supervision by a FWMA staff member or volunteer while on FWMA premises.  This program runs every Saturday during the summer.

Community Service Program

This program is offered by the Wakulla County Probation Office for juveniles who, for one reason or the other, have gotten into trouble and community service hours are required as part of their sentence.  Each year we try to pick one of these individuals who have shown significant progress with us and offer them a chance to join the Student Work Program in the summer.

College and University  Programs

We have contacted Biology, Pre-Vet and other animal associated courses at Florida State University, FAMU and Tallahassee Community College to offer students hands-on experience working with animals so they will be better prepared at graduation for the career choice they have made.  We have also contacted Keiser College and Lively Technical College (both located in Tallahassee) to offer their business and construction students experience in the business world and project opportunities (we believe if you can market for a non-profit you can market and sell anything).

Tallahassee Museum of   Science and Natural History

We will be offering their summer camps the opportunity to travel to FWMA, to complete special projects and to gain experience in learning “How to be a Zoo Keeper”.  These workdays require an FWMA staff member / volunteer to supervise the groups.

Outreach Programs

Throughout the year we are asked to do a number of education programs in our schools, local libraries, churches and to participate in community events.  This involves taking our education animals and materials off site and sometimes requires setting up an education booth with activities for both children and adults.  To date, we have 14 events scheduled in 2006.
