Coastal Optimist Club Collects School Supplies for Local Schools

sorting supplies 250The Coastal Optimist Club held a school supply drive in order to gather back-to-school necessities for those children who might not be able to get them otherwise.  Donation boxes were placed in each Wakulla Bank Branch location in Wakulla County, as well as the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Corrections.

According to June Vause, Coastal Optimist Club president, the drive began a little over two weeks ago.  "We collected a good amount of supplies in a short amount of time," said Vause.  "The Coastal Optimist Club members also either donated supplies or cash to purchase supplies."  Optimist Club member JoAnn Daniels, who is also principal at Wakulla Middle School, did the shopping.  "We knew JoAnn would know exactly what to get," said Vause.

Representatives from Wakulla County schools gathered at the Ochlockonee Bay branch of Wakulla Bank on Friday, August 25, to sort out and pick up the supplies.  Each school received a generous amount of many different kinds of supplies, including everything from colored pencils to backpacks.  The following supplies were collected:

339 boxes of crayons
67 boxes of washable markers
87 bottles of glue
220 colored folders
132 boxes of wooden #2 pencils
25 boxes of mechanical pencils
75 pens
43 pairs of scissors
20 pencil boxes
111 packages of loose leaf notebook paper
71 composition books
14 boxes of tissue
42 backpacks
10 rulers
10 compasses
12 3 ring binder notebooks
6 pencil sharpeners
13 dictionaries
58 boxes of colored pencils
8 containers of bacterial soap
1 box of anitbacterial wipes
13 packages of index cards
23 calculators

The Coastal Optimist Club would like to thank the Wakulla News for advertising the event, and Comcast Cable for advertising as well.  Thanks also to Wakulla Bank, the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office, and the Department of Corrections for placing collection boxes in their facilities.  The Coastal Optimist Club would also like to thank all those citizens who helped out by donating supplies in the boxes placed about the county.  "We are really pleased with the amount of supplies we were able to give this year," said Vause, "and hope to do even better next year."
