Rock 'n' Roll with the Big Kahunas at Wakulla Springs Lodge
If you like to go wild and dance to music of the 60's and 70's you won't have to go far!
The Friends of Wakulla Springs State Park is opening up the Wakulla Springs Lodge to all dancers on Friday, Nov. 30, from 8 to 10 p.m. Music will be provided by the zany Tallahassee rock 'n' roll band The Big Kahunas. The band's generous offer to play a benefit concert last year in Tallahassee was so well attended, the Friends decided why go up there? Bring the band here!
Now's your chance to let loose, enjoy the atmosphere of the lobby at that historic lodge and know that your ticket will go toward the Friends' efforts to enhance the park. There will be a cash bar, and tickets are $10 each. Call 224-5950 for more information or to make a reservation. Why not come early, eat dinner and then dance those calories away? And a special room rate of $87 for the Big Kahunas event is in effect if you feel you're too exhausted to drive home.
The Big Kahunas keep growing in size and the number of local benefits it assists. Long known for the band's enthusiastic cover of 60's tunes, from the Beach Boys to the Beatles, this local group has a strong loyal following and has been a favorite of many local charities. Hailed as “The Creature from the Black Lagoon Meets the Big Kahunas.” “Some people will have a hard time distinguishing us from the Creature, but we are the short fat guys”, said drummer Steve Metz. “We also sing better," according to Metz. The Big Kahunas recently added noted singer Stuart Reese as a vocalist to combine talents with regulars John Lovett on lead guitar, Bob Cox on keyboard, Bobby Adams on bass, and Steve Metz on drums. Stuart Reese is a well known local singer who fronted the FAMU jazz band with Lindsay Sergeant back in the mid-70s. Stuart was a founding member of the rock and roll bands, the Jolt Band and Low Flying Planes, and has performed with his own jazz band. Lead guitar player John Lovett, a distinguished Harvard graduate and corporate lawyer, is an accomplished guitar player who also plays in several bluegrass bands, the Borderline Bluegrass Band and the Spontaneous Mountain Boys. Keyboard player Bob Cox, a successful trial lawyer, played for years for a well known Florida band in the 70’s, “Southern Comfort, fronting for national acts throughout the South. Bass player Bobby Adams, a former defensive starter for the University of Florida Gators and a member of the Leon High Football Hall of Fame, also plays bass for another local band, the Low Flying Planes. Drummer Steve Metz is partner in a local law firm and previously played in the Jolt Band.
