In Memory of Laura Belle Summerlin Petty

Laura Belle Summerlin Petty, 86, of Panama City, Florida, died Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in Medart, Florida.

Mrs. Petty was born October 11, 1921, in Holmes County, Florida.  She was the daughter of Clifton T. Summerlin and Katie Outlaw Summerlin of Sweet Gum Head, Florida.

She was a long-time resident of Panama City, Florida, where she was a member of the St. Andrew United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star,  and the St. Andrew chapter of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.  She was a seamstress and clothing designer, retired cosmetologist and instructor at Haney Vocation School in Panama City, Florida and for a number of years served as a Cosmetology Examiner for the State Dept. of Professional Regulations.  She was also a Special Deputy for the Bay County, Florida, Sheriff's Office, where her marksmanship won numerous trophies and awards.  Mrs. Petty was an accomplished artist, who was known locally for her paintings of landscapes and seascapes, and particularly of lighthouses.

Mrs. Petty was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Petty of Panama City, Florida.  She is survived by her son, William H. Petty, and daughter-in-law, Anne Petty, of Crawfordville, Florida; her granddaughter, April Petty, of Seattle, Washington, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 16, 2008, at Sweet Gum Head, Florida, where she was buried in the Summerlin family cemetery.  The graveside ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Myers Carter of Crawfordville, Florida.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, Ill, 60601-7633; www.alz.org ).
