John Elias Whiddon, Jr., 83, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010, in Crawfordville, Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma Ruth Whiddon, his sister, Mary Lee Whiddon Johnson, and his dog Honey.He was born in Carrabelle, Florida and was a lifelong resident of Wakulla County. He was a member of Crawfordville First Baptist Church; was in the U.S. Army and retired as a mechanic and equipment operator for the Wakulla County School System.
He was a self-made man who shared his knowledge with everyone and helped many. He served in World War II, worked on and drove drag race cars, learned to fly planes, operated large cranes, and wasn’t afraid to try anything. He was from the Ivan Community and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Suite 100, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 31, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel. Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel in Crawfordville is in charge of arrangements
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Crawfordville First Baptist Church. Graveside services will follow at Whiddon Lake Cemetery, with luncheon at First Baptist Church for any who would like to attend.
Mr. Whiddon will also be remembered by 8 children, 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two expected great, great grandchildren.
