Houston "House Cat" Taff

Houston "House Cat" Taff, devoted husband, loving father, brother, loyal friend, and avid outdoorsman rose with the rising tide August 30, 2008, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.  He leaves behind his wife of forty years, Beth Harvey Taff.  He is survived by his daughters Christy Taff, Amy Sherman and her husband Travis, Windy Jones and her husband Merwyn; one godson, Tony Yoemans; three granddaughters, Reagan and Abbigail Sherman and Kolbie Jones, and one grandson, Jaxon Taff; one sister, Oleta Taff Lawhon and one brother, Clayton Taff; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

Houston was born March 1, 1943 at Johnson's Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida to fourth generation Wakullians, the late Commodore and Winnifred Taff.  He graduated from Crawfordville High School, received an A.A. Degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and completed his B.S. Degree in Business at Florida State University where he played baseball.

Houston was a leader in the Apalachicola Valley Conference and a founding member of the Wakulla Men's Club.  He was the first Varsity Baseball coach at Wakulla High School and instrumental in the development of women's sports with the Wakulla County Recreation Department, as well as with the Wakulla County Schools.  In honor of his dedication to athletics, the Wakulla County School Board recently named the Varsity baseball field "Houston Taff Field" .  The Wakulla Seminole Boosters are in the process of endowing an athletic scholarship in his name at Florida state University.

He was employed by the State of Florida as a Nuisance Alligator Trapper for over 35 years.  Houston was the presiding President of the Florida Alligator Trappers Association; a position he held for over 15 years.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Crawfordville First Baptist Church.  Funeral services will also be held at Crawfordville First Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with graveside service immediately following at Arran Cemetery Addition.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Houston Taff Wakulla Seminole Scholarship (Attn. Doris Harrington, P.O. Box 610, Crawfordville, FL  32326) or Big Bend Hospice.
