Up Close and Personal Spotlights Wakulla Historian Betty Green
Written by Betty Ann Korzenny, Ph.D. Friday, 28 October 2011 06:08
St. Marks - The St. Marks Yacht Club will host Wakulla County historian Betty Green as the featured speaker at the Club’s second Up Close and Personal Spotlight on Saturday, November 5 at 7:30 pm.
Green is a Charter Member of the Wakulla County Historical Society, co-founder of the County Historical Museum and a Wakulla Times columnist. This event is open to the members of St. Mark’s Yacht Club, their friends, and the public.
In a conversational-style interview led by Dr. Betty Ann Korzenny, Adjunct Professor, Florida State University, School of Communication, Green will share her own three generational stories of Wakulla County, along with anecdotes from the founding of the county’s historical society and amusing tales about the creation of the Historical Museum. She will discuss what drives her to be a historian, what she believes history is and speak of the first time she felt she “touched history”.
To “keep history real” Korzenny invites everyone to bring a favorite piece of history to display such as old family or business photographs, pottery shards, arrowheads and old glass bottles. “With the artifacts that are brought and displayed, we’ll have our own museum for an evening,” said Korzenny.
Already instrumental in the first edition of The Heritage of Wakulla County, Green is currently involved in gathering stories for the second edition. She expressed the need for the community to do the same and save our stories for future generations. She said, “I think all of us will give meaning to the future as we tell our own stories.”
Korzenny said there will be light refreshments, a “meet and greet” time at the beginning of the evening and a time for discussion following. The Club is located at 36 Yacht Club Lane, St. Marks, Florida, 32355. Though the evening is free, seating is limited, so reservations should be made by calling Mickey Cantner at 850 210-7058 or emailing pelicancove1@earthlink.net.
