New W.H. Big Bend Buckmasters Club for Hunters being Formed
In 1991, 16 year old, W.H. "Dub" Johnson of Jefferson County became a quadriplegic in a bicycle accident. Today he anticipates wearing camouflage and hiding in deer blinds to hunt. Johnson now has special adaptive hunting gear thanks to a grant from Buckmasters American Deer Foundation (BADF) Disabled Services. The Buckmasters Foundation is a non-profit organization that, among other things, awards grants to people with physical disabilities including spinal cord injury, amputation, complications from cancer, neuromuscular diseases, blindness, stroke, and other diseases
{sidebar id=1}Sixteen years after his accident, Johnson has a new lease on life enjoying a favorite pastime again. Johnson said, "I am so grateful to the Buckmasters Foundation for giving me the opportunity to hunt again. I have missed being able to enjoy the woods and the sport of hunting since my accident. I plan to have lots of venison in the freezer this fall."
To help more people in this area, a new non-profit chapter named after Johnson is being formed in the Tallahassee area. The W.H. Big Bend Buckmasters Chapter will hold its first event in the fall. The 1st Annual Buckmasters Banquet is scheduled to be held on Thursday, October 4, in Tallahassee. BADF grants provide mechanical gun rests that allow quadriplegics to shoot a firearm or crossbow, as well as many other aids. Each set up normally costs around $2,500. Approximately 97 quadriplegic gun mounts have been awarded since 1996. BADF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that seeks to carry out the mission of making a real difference for real people. The foundations major benefactor is Streamlight – a flashlight manufacturing company.
