Paws in Prison Program in Full Swing in Wakulla County
{sidebar id=3}The Wakulla Paws in Prison Program is a partnership between the Citizens for the Humane Treatment of Animals (CHAT) of Wakulla, the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wakulla Correctional Institution. The program began on June 16th and aims to increase adoptions for the Wakulla County animal shelter. The program will also benefit inmates, offering them companionship and an opportunity to give back to the community. This type of program also provides skills that will be useful in finding jobs once an inmate’s incarceration ends.
Twelve shelter dogs will be housed at the Wakulla Correction Institution for eight weeks while assigned inmates provide them with socialization and basic obedience training. At the end of the training, the dogs will be returned to CHAT to be adopted out to families in the Tallahassee area. Once the dogs “graduate,” another group of dogs will be taken to the institution for socialization and training.
This special group of dogs will be available for adoption in mid-August. They will be obedience and crate trained—and ready to move into their forever homes. The adoption fee for a Wakulla Paws in Prison dog is $150, which includes the cost of rabies vaccination and spay or neuter. If you’re interested in adopting one of these wonderful dogs, please contact the CHAT Adoption Center at 850-926-0890.
