Riversprings Middle School fell to 0-2 after losing an exciting and hard fought battle with the Marianna Bulldogs on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, by a score of 26-22.
RMS struggled early in the running game, but a position shake-up saw stand-out wide receiver Jacob Austin move to the backfield, and in one half of work led all RMS rushers with 46 yards on 10 carries. Demarcus Lindsey didn’t have his usual stellar performance rushing, but had a good night receiving the ball, with 3 catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Jake McCarl also pitched in 44 yards receiving on 3 catches. Quarterback Zach Norman was 8 of 16 passing for 99 yards and 1 touchdown. RMS was driving late in the fourth quarter, making it to the MMs 21 yard line, but miscommunication on the play resulted in an interception by the Bulldogs with under a minute left, which sealed the game for Marianna.
The RMS defense played well most of the night, but the bulk of Marianna points came as a result of just a few big plays. MMS scored on a 24 yard run (set up by a 51 yard run on 2nd and 34), an 84 yard run, and a 62 yard pass in the 4th quarter to reclaim the lead. Those four plays equaled 221 yards of MMS 282 yards of total offense.
The Bears will get back to work and prepare for the first of two games with arch rival Wakulla Middle School, on Thursday September 20. The first game is usually played earlier in the season, but because of scheduling conflicts with the stadium, it had to moved to a later date. The two schools will meet again on October 18th to decide the County Championship.
