Thanks to a Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) traffic safety grant, the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office will conduct saturation patrols and a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the 3000 block of Crawfordville Highway in Crawfordville.
WCSO deputies will begin setting up for the checkpoint at 11:30 p.m. and the actual checkpoint will take place from midnight to 1 a.m. into Sunday morning. The saturation patrols will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 and continue until 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23.
Special emphasis of the saturation patrol will include the St. Marks and Wakulla Station areas. A Labor Day weekend checkpoint and patrol, also funded by DOT, included 45 vehicles passing through the checkpoint and an average delay of one minute and 30 seconds unless the motorists had issues to be addressed
The checkpoint resulted in one DUI arrest and six citations being issued. The citations included: three for driving while license suspended or revoked and one each for failure to exhibit driver license on demand, no proof of insurance and failure to exhibit registration.
The saturation patrols that occurred during and after the checkpoint included the issuance of another 14 citations and a second DUI arrest. The citations included two expired tags; two speeding tickets; one careless driving citation; one stop sign violation; one failure to maintain a single lane; two lack of proof of insurance; two failure to exhibit driver license; two driving while license suspended or revoked; and one failure to exhibit registration.
