Medart Elementary Hosts 4-H Tropicana Public Speaking Competition

Medart Elementary School held their annual 4-H Tropicana Public Speaking Competition this past Tuesday, March 13, 2012 in the school's cafetorium.  Ten fourth graders and eight fifth graders participated in the public speaking contest, which is sponsored each year by Tropicana Products, Inc.  Wakulla County 4-H Agent Sherri Kraeft and Medart Elementary School 4th grade teacher Beth Brown worked together to organize this years' event.

The 4-H Tropicana Public Speaking Competition helps thousands of young people annually learn how to write and deliver a speech.  More than 150,000 young people in over 50 Florida counties in grades 4-6 participate in the contest on an annual basis.  The event is a great way for children to build self-esteem, gain valuable communication skills, and learn how to write and present a public speech.

Tropicana has sponsored the contest since 1969 and provides classroom materials for teachers, certificates of participation, medallions for school winners, trophies for county winners, summer camp scholarships and Tropicana orange juice refreshments for county contests.  Close to 2 million students have participated in this program since its beginning.

Fifth grade participants were:  Amanda Lariscy, Jonah Lawhon, Ariel Nix, Zoe Nix, Madison Reed, Kristen Romeka, Taylor Rowan, and Jason Westmark.  Fourth grade participants were:  Gracie Allen, Brandon Borchardt, Farrah Bratcher, Bryce Buda, Mikayla Corrigan, Tabby DeHart, Shelby Delvalle, Payton Fewell, Britney Hutton, and Brayden Vearil.

The Medart Elementary School 5th grade winners were:  First Place - Jason Westmark; Second Place - Kristen Romeka; and Third Place - Madison Reed.  The Medart Elementary School 4th grade winners were:  First Place - Brayden Vearil; Second Place - Gracie Allen; and Third Place - Farrah Bratcher.
