Few Jobs Listed Online in May
Written by Desiree Gorman, Workforce Plus Wednesday, 08 June 2011 08:55
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—According to The Conference Board, recognized research association measuring employment trends monthly through online “Help Wanted” ads, there was a four percent decrease (a loss of 200 jobs) in online advertised vacancies in Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla counties in the month of May.
Compared to a year ago, the WORKFORCE plus area saw a 17 percent increase of 697 jobs since May 2010. Today the local unemployment rate sits at 7.4 % for Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla Counties.
While healthcare and retail keep their spots as the top two hiring occupations in the WORKFORCE plus area, the Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver occupation pushes out computer related industries for the third spot with the most online help wanted ads.
With these statistics in mind, WORKFORCE plus encourages job seekers to tailor their efforts to the industries with most vacancies. For job seekers, this means pointing out how skills on a resume can transfer to the healthcare industry. It can mean explaining in a cover letter how a class provided the training necessary for a job in sales. WORKFORCE plus professionals host weekly workshops that teach job seekers these necessary job-seeking skills at no cost.
Once job seekers have tailored their resumes to the top hiring industries, WORKFORCE plus encourages them to apply for those jobs listed online through the free online job search system for the State of Florida known as the Employ Florida Marketplace, www.employflorida.com.
“There are a number of great jobs available in our area,” Kimberly A. Moore, Chief Executive Officer of WORKFORCE plus said. “Jobseekers simply need to focus their efforts on what the employer needs and how they can meet those needs. And WORKFORCE plus has the resources that job seekers need at no cost. ”
For those job seekers located in Gadsden County, they are encouraged to attend the Gadsden Career & Resource Expo. The Expo will feature hiring employers, information about training grants and scholarships, education opportunities and more. The Gadsden Career & Resource Expo will take place at the WORKFORCE plus office at 1140 West Clark Street, Quincy, Thursday, June 9 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Additionally, WORKFORCE plus is hosting two Youth Career Expos. The Youth Career Expo in Gadsden County will take place Saturday, June 11 from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the same Quincy location. The Leon County Youth Career Expo will take place at 2525 South Monroe Street, Tallahassee, Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
To prepare for the Expos, jobseekers must have an error-proof resume, must dress professionally, and must have written and practiced a 30 second elevator speech. If you or anyone you know is interested in these career expos and would like help in preparing, please call 1-866-WFP-JOB1 or email wpf@wfplus.org .
