The Wakulla High School Lady War Eagles tennis team went to the district tournament in hopes of doing well, and did not leave disappointed.
The girls won 6 out of 7 District championship titles and one runner up, and have already qualified at least two players to advance to the State finals in Altamonte Springs.
On day one all WHS girls won their matches and ended with a score of seven. Suwannee High school was close behind with a score of 6. On day two the girls were still able to play in spite of a bad storm that rolled through the area. In the doubles matches, the #2 team of Courtney Briggs and Shelby Bunce fell short as they lost to Suwannee by scores of 5-7 and 3-6. The #1 doubles team of Alicia Porter and Kellie Graves beat Suwannee 6-4, 6-4. By winning the District Championship they have earned the right to play at the state tournament.
In singles play, #2 Kellie Graves defeated Suwannee 6-2 and 7-5; #3 Kara Smith defeated Suwannee 4-6, 6-1 and 6-3; #4 Shelby Bunce defeated Rickards 6-2, 6- 3; and #5 Alyssa Porter defeated Suwannee 7-5 and 6-3. Number one singles player Alicia Porter played last, defeating Suwannee 6-2 and 6-2. This win also qualifies Alicia to play singles as well as doubles at the state tournament.
The Lady War Eagles Tennis team has not been to the state tournament since 2005, and to have a single player and the doubles team competing is a great accomplishment. Best of luck to Alicia Porter and Kellie Graves.
WHS will host Regionals on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:00pm against Arnold High School from Panama City. Come out and support this hard working group of ladies!
